Do-It-Yourself December - Cold Winter Weather is Here!!! Cold winter weather could mean high heat bills, however it does not have to if you follow the weatherization tips below: 1. The first step is to check your home for air tightness. You can do this by holding a lit incense next to all areas where air can be entering your home. If the smoke from the incense is traveling horizontally - there is air leaking in this area. (Note: Do this on a windy day - Check doors, windows, electrical outlets, plumbing pipes, and all areas where there is an air path to the outside. 2. Caulk area areas which you have detected air leaks 3. Check attic area - look for loose insulation and areas where air could enter. (Staple up the insulation - staple plastic over areas that are especially bad and if necessary replace insulation) 4. Close fireplace flue damper when not in use. 5. Install storm windows - If windows are old and a large amount air is entering your home through these old windows - They may need to be replaced.
